In the United States, everyone is entitled to a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit bureaus at least once a year for free. Some states, such as Massachusetts, allow residents to check their report as often as they want for free. Your credit report can be found at the official website: http://www.annualcreditreport.com/.

After entering the required information, you theoretically should be able to access copies of your report from Transunion, Equifax, and Experian. During this process, some of the bureaus try to get you to accidentally sign up for a credit monitoring service, so read each page carefully. Also, if you decide not to use the paid service, the Transunion site often has problems and will tell you to call a 1-800 number. You may also need to call the 1-800 number if you cannot remember any of the answers to the security questions, or if you have previously applied a fraud alert to your identity.

Make sure you do not accidentally sign up for the credit monitoring service over the phone, unless you intend to! I do not recommend it, though. When you call the number, and give them your info, Transunion will send you a printed copy of your report. In addition, Experian will also mail you a print copy of your report without asking you if you want this, so you may want to make sure to click the “mask social security” box at the beginning of the process.

To get your credit score, you can let the bureaus’ sites sign you up for the credit monitoring service, which will give you access to your credit score. However, the monitoring services will charge your credit card automatically, usually around $9.95 a month. These companies are aware that people will sign up for the monitoring service, just to get their score and immediately cancel, and so usually there is a waiting period between the time you open the account and are allowed to close it. They hope that this will cause you to forget to cancel it, so that they can charge you.

I do not recommend trying to get your score this way, these companies can be really sneaky. You can also try to buy some real estate, the bank will check your credit score in order to approve your loan application, and it is possible that they will tell you. Car dealerships may or may not tell you. Carmax, for example, will not tell you your score, and the agents claim that they have no access to it.

You cannot determine your own credit score from the information on your credit report, since the formulas used are a FICO secret, but there is a calculator available to estimate your score: It will help give you an idea of your score in a few minutes for free. Or you can contact your representatives and demand more rights for consumers. CLICK BELOW FOR QUIZ

Understanding your credit score is essential to surviving in today’s economy. Not only does it impact your ability to buy a car or rent or buy a house, but more and more employers and insurance companies are factoring your credit rating into their decision to hire or insure you.

A good first step in developing and maintaining a strong rating, is understanding what does and does not affect your score. To this end, we have identified the following three common myths:

1. Checking your own credit will lower your score Credit inquiries only result in points being taken from your score when they are made by potential lenders. And even in this case, several inquires made within 30-45 days are generally treated as one inquiry so shopping around for a loan is not damaging. Checking your own credit never results in points being taken away, nor do inquires made by landlords or potential employers made at your request. In fact, checking your own credit regularly can be an important first step to getting a loan or applying for a job. Errors on your report or identity theft activity can both result in lowered scores and should be disputed or corrected prior to applying for credit or employment.

2. You can improve your credit score by closing old accounts Credit scores are based, in part, on the difference between your available credit, and the amount you owe. Closing your accounts reduces your available credit which narrows the gap between your available credit and your debt. As a result, closing accounts can actually damage your credit score. Credit card companies also need to see that you can manage several open accounts responsibly, so the recommendation is that you use and maintain 3-4 open accounts.

3. Paying off your debts immediately will fix a low credit score Reducing your debt will certainly improve your credit score. However, because your credit score is a reflection of how you manage your finances over time, your payment history is weighted far more heavily than your current status. Paying off debts will not erase years of late or missed payments that may be reflected in your score.

As a result, in the event you receive a large sum of money (e.g. a bonus or inheritance) it may be better to pay some of it off and then make regular, timely payments with the balance to demonstrate improved fiscal responsibility.

What is a credit score, really? In this country we have made it our gateway for destruction. Think about it. A high credit score makes it easy to borrow money, and borrowing money invites elevated risk into our financial lives.

Money is fundamentally risky, so to succeed at the money game, we must reduce that risk as much as possible. In comes the credit score.

What does a good score tell us?

It tells us that its owner borrows quite a bit of money, and then pays their bills.

What does a low credit score tell us?

This is a more difficult question. A person that is financially responsible with their money can have a low score if they don’t borrow enough money. The utilities and rent could be paid early each month, and this person could have a great salary and money in the bank, but they would be considered a credit risk because of a low score. Now, it is a good judge of a person’s financial integrity in regards to their repayment of debt.

What it doesn’t take into consideration is the pushy and unethical practices of many credit card companies and lending institutions. Unfortunately, as unfair as all this might seem, these financial decisions that we make have enormous consequences. Low credit scores can increase insurance rates, increase interest rates on money you borrow, and can even keep you from getting a job. These scores are available for a small fee, and almost anyone with your social security number can request a copy.

Almost everyone who buys a house, mortgages a portion of it. This is a very big investment to most Americans. A low credit score can increase your rates significantly, costing you thousands of dollars, make it harder for you to make your payments, and ultimately bring the risk of foreclosure in hard financial times.

Bankruptcy may seem like the easy way out, or even the only way out, but it can have even worse consequences. Bankruptcy stays on your credit reports for 7 years in most cases. This makes trying to finance anything major, like a house or a car, during this time very difficult at best. The worst part of this financial choice is that many contracts ask if you have ever filed bankruptcy. This decision is one that could follow you for the rest of your life.

The best thing for us to do is to listen to our parents and work hard and save for the things we want. Remember that everyone makes mistakes, everyone falls for wants over needs from time to time, and we’re all in this together.

In today’s economy there is very little money and opportunities to go around, especially home loans and car loans. Therefore the person with the best credit score will be the first to be considered for a loan, or any type of major purchase.

A credit score of 500 is not good at all; a credit score below 640 is toward the lower end of not so good credit. A good credit score (fico score) is anything over 700. The lower your credit score the more likely you will be charged higher fees and higher interest rates.

A fico score consist of any account that you may have recently opened, and how many inquiries you have had on these accounts. It also consist of the length of your credit history, which includes the amount of credit you have available and how much credit you have already used. The fico score also consist of your payment history, whether you pay early, on time, late or whether your accounts are delinquent. It also includes your mortgage payments, and loans whether it be student or personal loans.

Having a good credit score can be the difference between buying a house and renting a studio apartment. You have to keep an eye on how you pay bills and try to pay early if you can, and always keep track of any credit cards you may have because the interest on those will effect how fast your debt clears up. Having a credit history is very important whether it is good or not so great because it gives you proof of your ability to borrow or payback money.

One thing about having a credit score of 500 is that you can try and bring that score up. The best ways to do that is to try and pay off the debt you do have. Call the creditors and make arrangements to pay off your accounts. Try not max out your accounts, show a long credit history, and only apply for credit you really need, don’t take out too many loans, monitor your credit report, watch out for identity theft and realize that this credit repair will take a while to do. You cannot repair your credit overnight, you have to make a plan and give yourself time to achieve your goals. Take one small step at a time and concur one account at a time.

Your credit score is something will follow you the rest of your life. Everything you do to improve your score can save you 100’s and even thousands of dollars.

A 650 credit score for instance is on the cusp of being excellent instead of just good or fair. So the question is how do you improve that score in order to get better interest rates on homes, cars and even credit cards?

The first thing everyone should do is look at your credit bureau report from all three credit bureaus. If you find information on your report that is not accurate and is derogatory, by all means challenge it. Non accurate information is required to be removed if it cannot be verified.

The best way however, to improve your 650 score, is to pay your credit cards down to half the limit and try to keep them there. This alone cam raise your credit score by 50 points or more. Do not close any accounts as this can potentially hurt your score. So keep inactive accounts open, perhaps by charging a small amount every month and paying it off. Some companies have resorted to closing accounts that are inactive and perceived to be costing them money just to maintain.

We all get credit cards offers in the mail and usually throw away the offer and go on our merry way until we receive the next offer. You can stop those offers from coming in the mail and even raise your credit score by doing so. By calling 1-888-5-OPT-OUT or visiting www.optoutprescreen.com you request that unsolicited offer are stopped. This alone can raise your credit score within a few months.

Another way to make sure your credit score is raised is to watch your inquiries. Don’t apply for something you don’t need because the credit bureau inquiry has the potential to lower your score. The fewer inquiries you have for additional credit the better your score will be. So when you are buying something inquire if they will pull a credit bureau report and if they are think twice as to whether you really need it.

The idea is to raise your credit score into the 700s approaching what is considered excellent credit.

There are 3 major credit bureaus. Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. All of your credit information is reported on these every single month. From the on time payments that you had, when you first got your credit card, to the late payment on your car that you accidentally forgot to pay on time for that really hectic month. Everything is reported.

Now when you are being reported to the credit bureaus it generates a credit score. Credit scores range between 300 to 850. The higher the credit score the more respectable you are. It sounds like a game, and it really is, however it is a game that affects our lives. Let’s say, you don’t have bad credit, so anything below 600 is classed as you being a risk. You’re not perfect; you have had some late payments, some over the credit line fees, so you’re not in the 800 range.

Let’s say you have a 700 credit score. 700, is quite a respectable score to have. This way the creditors look at you of being a low risk person. You are still a risk, but not as high as some of the much lower credit scoring people of this world. If you have around a 700 credit score, you should comfortably be able to purchase a house, or a car, or anything that needs credit. Do you need another credit card? With a 700 credit score, there should not be a big problem to get a card with a worthwhile limit, and a fairly decent interest rate.

Now keep in mind, that although a lot of the things you do change your credit score, but a lot of the things that you don’t do affect it to. Yes, I’m talking about identity theft. This is what can destroy a credit score. Even if you have made your payments every month without fail. Someone could be opening up accounts in your name, and making purchases in your name.

One of the best ways to keep an eye on this is through a credit monitoring service. You can get one of these if you have any kind of credit card, just call them and ask them. Even if you don’t have a credit card, you can contact the credit bureaus themselves, and ask for 1 free credit report per year. That way, you can check to make sure all of the information on there is correct, and you can make sure you maintain a credit score as high as you can.

Credit monitoring services constantly verify a customer’s credit card balances and reports to protect it from any malicious activities for a fixed amount. The clients are regularly notified about such information. These data can also be gathered freely from credit reporting agencies which give accurate facts. When credit accounts are not monitored by an individual, he is liable to be a victim of identity theft.

Private credit protection and monitoring services are available to customers who are risk-prone to identity theft. Identity Guard, Lifelock and Trustedid are a few examples of credit monitoring services that deserve to be mentioned here. Various aspects of these credit monitoring services can be compared helping consumers to assess their qualities.

Let’s compare Identity Guard and Lifelock which have got reputation in credit monitoring services.

Identity Guard credit service charges from five dollars to seventeen dollars while in Lifelock services a person has to pay ten dollars and for each children 2.50 dollars per month. Identity guard provides credit reports once every three months through correspondence and email while Lifelock sends them once every year through telephone and cell phone. Both of them don’t ask for extra payment from clients for alerting about fraudulent activity. In Identity guard, the internet is investigated to check that client’s credit cards are not misused and insurance is availed by affected parties. Lifelock provides product guarantee and 24-hours customer support.

Credit monitoring services are available to avoid criminal activities in credit reports and to prevent identity theft. Identity theft creates lots of trouble since persons who are affected normally face criminal prosecution, financial loss and shame. It takes time and money to clear up a bad name that has been created without any fault from the individual’s side.

Care must be taken while choosing the credit monitoring services since different types of assistance is offered by each of them. Many offer features that have their own benefits and difficulties. Credit monitoring is especially effective for preventing identity theft by using alerts to evade swindling attempts. It is better to be safe than sorry; better to prevent identity and credit theft rather than lose one’s money and identity. The system is simple, safe and protects credit card clients who are growing in number.

Identity theft can be a very overwhelming experience. The sense of invasion and fear it can cause may seem permanent, but there are some steps you can take to minimize the damage.

Report the crime to the Federal Trade Commission online at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/.

Contact the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Trans Union and Equifax, and ask to put a fraud alert on your credit.

Every time a business checks your credit, the warning will show up that you have been a victim of identity theft. The initial fraud alert lasts 90 days, while the extended one can last seven years. Some states even allow credit freezes that restrict access to your credit report for a fee.

Go over your credit report carefully and report any errors. Make sure you contact the credit reporting agency directly and in writing. Continue to monitor this to report any unauthorized activity as soon as it occurs. Each of your creditors should be notified as well, from credit cards to loan companies. They can often change your account information to prevent any future activities, but make sure to monitor your account to report any fraudulent spending.

Change your passwords to be more secure. It is usually best to avoid birthdays, mother’s maiden names, or any information easily accessed in public records. Make sure to file a police report on the crime with your local police or sheriff’s department. This may take some perseverance on your part, but it is important for disputing fraudulent charges.

You should not get a new social security number as that can make it difficult for new creditors to distinguish you as the victim rather than perpetrator. It is also unwise to cancel all your accounts since your credit will be shaky for a while after, but you should immediately close or freeze the accounts that have been tampered with. Protect yourself. Shred financial documents and unsolicited credit applications before throwing them away, and do not respond to spam emails.

Avoid phishing sites by always going directly to your financial institutions website or better yet physical address. Be protective of your personal information, and continue to monitor your credit information carefully. It can feel overwhelming, but with diligence and perseverance, the damage done by identity theft can be undone.

Debt settlement is the method of paying back any loans borrowed from financial institutions or individuals. Effective planning and execution of good budgeting is the wiser way to consolidate and pay-off debts. Many financial professionals and banks often assist their clients to repay their loans entirely by controlling expenses.

Some resources to help debtors like Superior Debt Relief Services and Debt Free Associates freely recommend and offer advice on ways to consolidate and settle your debts. Individuals usually borrow huge sums beyond their limit using credit cards and later have trouble repaying the interest and the loaned sum. Therefore credit card companies are often forced to give concessions and flexible terms for repayment in debt settlement with the help of counselors. Sometimes debtors are allowed huge concessions for repaying their outstanding amount in single payment.

The benefits that arise out of debt settlement are
*Discount in interest rates and loan premium from forty to eighty percent
*Freedom of duration and number of payments for settling loans

The disadvantages of debt settlement are
*Lower credit score
*Lengthens the period to complete loans
*Additional tax over loan that was deducted

Consolidating one’s debt is brought about by repaying several loans with the help of a lower interest loan borrowed freshly. The duration is also elongated to enable easier repayment and is an option considered against bankruptcy. Debt Free Associates have lent their hands to people who are bankrupt and entered into wrong consolidation leading to unimaginable harassment. Loans availed with collateral security usually have lower rates of interest.

Consolidating credit card debts benefit’s the individual or organization in the following ways:

*Cancellation of interest that was not paid
*Single disbursement against several smaller loans
*Guaranteed payment of debt within a short period due to lower interest rates

The drawbacks of debt consolidation are described below in detail.
*Poor credit report for a short period
*The entire debt should be repaid.
*Requirement of considerable collateral security to obtain the single large loan

Debts generally, and in particular Credit card debts, cause a range of social problems from divorce to suicide, and resulting in bankruptcy. The current economic crisis faced by America and the European countries have resulted in underemployment, job loss, marital crisis, health problems and bankruptcy. Some financial institutions offer loans to improve commercial organizations submerging due to huge amount of debts and turning them into profit making business.

If you are considering contacting a debt consolidation service to get your finances in order, there are two major things which you should consider before you call. If you have a large amount of debt which you are going to be requesting a loan for, you will want to take this, as well as your past credit history into account, as it is certain that not every institution will lend you cash for a consolidation if you have a bad track record.

This leads into the fact that financial institutions have certain prerequisites that you must adhere to if you desire a consolidation loan, and is our first important thing which you must ensure you have taken care of before you contact a debt consolidation service organization. Debt consolidation services will not be too keen on lending to you if you have no job, so you should ensure that you are employed before applying.

Secondarily, the consolidation service will require you to provide them with a budget so that they can ensure that you have adequate means to pay off the amount which they will be (hopefully) lending you. Something you may want to consider is making many payments per month instead of just one, so that your debtload will decrease faster.

The second item that you must consider prior to applying with a debt consolidation service is whether or not you actually require the services of a debt consolidation firm. If you are in the midst of a financial turnaround, and have been doing will with paying off your debt, you should consider whether the services of the consolidation service are really necessary. Chances are, if you have no need of the service, you will just dig yourself further into the hole instead of being better off in the end.
